Chateau Meyney 2019
Description
Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
About the estate: Château Meyney has a long monastic history, with Feuillant monks developing the property and its vineyards during the seventeenth century. Its approximately 126-acre vineyard occupies a gravelly slope overlooking the Gironde estuary, near Château Montrose. Beneath the gravel lies a distinctive seam of blue clay, part of the estate’s moisture-retaining subsoil. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot form the foundation of its wines, with Petit Verdot having been an important part of Meyney’s identity since the 1920s.
Tasting notes: Blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe red berries mingle with cedar, tobacco, graphite and hints of dark chocolate and baking spice. The 2019 offers concentrated fruit without excessive weight, balancing a generous, polished texture with freshness and a distinctly savory edge. Floral nuances bring lift to the aromas, while ripe tannins provide structure through a long, satisfying finish. A classic Saint-Estèphe that combines depth and character with an appealing sense of refinement.
Notable ratings: 95 points — Vinous, Neal Martin; 94 points — James Suckling. Martin’s 95-point score came from a 2023 blind tasting, where he praised its balance, supple texture and long finish. Suckling emphasized its polished fruit and velvety tannins.
