2020 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge
Description
Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, France · Cru Classé de Graves
About the estate: Set in a forest clearing in Léognan, Domaine de Chevalier is a distinguished Graves estate producing both red and white wines. Purchased by the Bernard family in 1983, the property is known for its close relationship with the surrounding woodland, which contributes to its distinctive microclimate and biodiversity. The vines grow in gravel over clay-gravel subsoil, and meticulous hand harvesting and sorting help preserve the precision and quality of the fruit.
Tasting notes: Concentrated blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry unfold alongside graphite, subtle smoke, floral notes and a touch of orange zest. The palate is rich and deeply layered, yet remarkably poised, with finely textured tannins and freshness balancing its power. Dark fruit, spice and mineral notes linger through an exceptionally long finish. This is an elegant, serious Bordeaux with the concentration and structure for extended cellaring.
Notable ratings: 99 points — James Suckling; 98+ points — Jeb Dunnuck; 96 points — Decanter. It also ranked No. 45 in Jeb Dunnuck’s Top 100 Wines of 2023, with Dunnuck identifying it as one of the estate’s potentially legendary vintages.
